Awake

"If we are open only to discoveries which will accord with what we know already, we may as well stay shut. This is why the marvellous achievements of science and technology are of so little real use to us. It is in vain that we can predict and control the course of events in the future, unless we know how to live in the present. It is in vain that doctors prolong life if we spend the extra time being anxious to live still longer. It is in vain that engineers devise faster and easier means of travel if the new sights that we see are merely sorted and understood in terms of old prejudices. It is in vain that we get the power of the atom if we are just to continue in the rut of blowing people up.
Tools such as these, as well as the tools of language and thought, are of real use to men only if they are awake-not lost in the dreamland of past and future, but in the closest touch with that point of experience where reality can alone be discovered: this moment."
(Alan W Watts, The wisdom of insecurity)

News 100

i compiled and consumed a day and evening of the BBC news for the first time in 6 months. I ask myself what do such news subjects and topics have to do with my life, i find the answer that nothing in the news has anything to do with me, rather, it affects me because it influences the way other people think. The occurrence of murder, robbery, celebrity and absurdity are for me, negligible to none, as they are for everyone else, in statistic reality. However, the comprehension and belief of their occurrence by the majority is that they are ubiquitous and regular. when people are told things repeatedly over a long time, they are likely to believe them eventually. approximately 830,044,544 Chinese born in China in the last 60 years believe Tibet simply is, and always has been a region of China because the Peoples Republic of China implemented this propaganda in the education system.
In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is a lunatic surrounded by blind people, who don't care what he has to say because he talks of unsensational things. i don't watch television, or read newspapers, and understand why few maybe interested in what i have to say.
Have everyone believe in omnipresent murder, robbery, celebrity and absurdity and they will be afraid, not only afraid, but when it doesn't happen for them they will believe their life is dull and boring without it. after 9 months, this is the 100th post on this blog. may you all experience happiness and the causes of happiness.

Doors

Opening and closing doors is something i find myself interested in. There are things we do everyday without thinking "i am doing this" things that appear unimportant. We open doors differently everyday, and different doors open differently. some require much force, then snap back, others fly open and crash unexpectedly. some protect, some welcome. In the detail is the understanding of greater things, as such, perhaps few things can be considered trivial.

Tech

For all those that say alternative technology isn't viable, i would say that i'm sitting in a farmhouse that is powering computers, lighting, wi-fi, running full scale studio equipment solely from wind and solar power on a farm in cornwall. all it took was a community, talent and commitment.

Climate calm

"Why is it not just campaigners, but politicians and scientists too, who are openly confusing the language of fear, terror and disaster with the observable physical reality of climate change, actively ignoring the careful hedging which surrounds science's predictions? we need to take a deep breath and pause. the language of catastrophe is not the language of science. it will not be visible in next year's global assessment for the world authority...
Framing climate change as an issue which evokes fear and personal stress becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. by 'sexing it up' we exacerbate, through psychological amplifiers, the very risks we are trying to ward off.
The careless (or conspiratorial?) translation of concern about Saddam Hussein's putative military threat into the case for WMD has had major geopolitical repercussions.
We need to make sure the agents and agencies in our society which would seek to amplify climate change risks do not lead us down a similar counter-productive pathway." (Mike Hulme, 2006)
